Egyptian

In our Ancient Egyptian collection we hold around 130 items. We have a mummy and several mummified animals, accompanied by other ritualistic objects including shabti figures, offerings, hieroglyphics and jewellery:

We have stoneage flakes and flints from the Mesolithic/Neolithic periods (8,000–2,800 BC).

We hold mummified cats, birds and crocodiles from the Formative Period (3,200–300 BC).

We hold a ring setting in amber (representing the eye of Horus) and hieroglyphics on papyrus from the New Kingdom (1,540–1,070 BC).

We hold scarabs and shabti figurines from the Third Intermediate Period (1,070–664).

We hold amulets of gods including Isis, Anubis and Pataikos from the Late Period (664–332 BC).

We also hold cat caskets from the Nile Valley and bronze figurines of gods including Horus and Osiris from the Late Period.

Ancient Egyptian Mummy from the Nile Valley, Egypt 300 BC
This is the only Egyptian Mummy in the South East of England, outside of London.

Our mummy was X-rayed in the 1960s and it was discovered that he was a young man of about 26 years old with injuries to his jaw, ribs and thumb. No amulets or other personal adornments were found within his bandages.

A coffin belonging to a man named Pa-er-abu accompanies our mummy. The decoration is not of the highest quality, which signifies that he was possibly a low ranking priest or administrator.
