Archaeology

Greek

In our Greek collection we hold around 150 items, primarily coins, oil lamps and fragments of ceramic wares.

We hold many oil lamps from the Greek Hellenistic (336–30 BC) and Classical (479–336 BC) periods. Most are wheel made in a simple, circular design, but we also have some mould made examples with dotted patterns, lettering and other engravings.

We hold ceramic ware in the form of jugs, jars and cups, mostly fragmented and from the Hellenistic period. Some are painted with geometric designs, for example we have a two handled miniature skythos (cup) with delicate decoration of a proto-Corinthian design. We also hold a decorated vessel for anointing oil (aryballos) from the Archaic Period (700–479 BC).

Around 50% of our Greek collection is comprised of coins. It includes a tetradrachm, a silver coin of Athens from the Classical period and a Numidian bronze coin of Massinissa from the Hellenistic period. Many of the coins depict the head of the gods and eagles.

Amphora Fragment from the
Greek Classical Period 500-31 BC

These fragments come from a black-figured belly-handled amphora. It depicts Herakles (also known as Hercules) the famous son of Zeus who fought for his immortality through the completion of 12 great tasks. Herakles here is seen fighting the three-bodied warrior Geryon. Herakles wields a club over his head with a lion-skin tied around his shoulders, the lion's jaw framing his head. Herakles is often depicted wearing a lion skin as a symbol of his success against a Nemean lion who he defeated using only a wooden club.
