This collection contains predominantly Romano-British coins, tiles, glass and ceramic wares. It includes items excavated from a Romano-British cemetery in Beech Road, Haslemere, dated c. AD 43–120. It was uncovered in the early 20th century and excavated in two phases under the direction of Mr Swanton, the curator of Haslemere Educational Museum. The find includes several vessels, such as cinerary urns, all made on a potter´s wheel. There are also many worked flints, flakes, scrapers, burnt stones and burnt human bone fragments.
We hold Romano-British glass in the form of vessels, beads and fragments from across Britain. Highlights include window glass from the site of a Roman Villa at Chiddingfold, Surrey. We also hold Roman coins from the 1st–4th century AD, including silver denarius of Hadrian and bronze antoninianus of Allectus.
Although the majority of items in this category are Romano British, we also have a collection of Italian items, amongst which are artefacts from Pompeii. Our Pompeii collection includes small mosaic tiles, belt fragments, brooches, rings and items for personal grooming, such as ear scoops. Other Roman artefacts from Italy include stone fragments from Caesar´s Palace and decorated wall plaster and tiles from Tiberinus Villa in Capri.
