Periodicals

The museum cares for around 13,500 scientific and historical periodicals.  A large proportion is related to Haslemere and the surrounding counties. The main subjects covered are archaeology, geology, botany, zoology and religion.

Major societies represented include the Surrey, Hampshire and Sussex Archaeological Societies, Surrey Records Society, Geologists Association, Linnean Society, Botanical Society of the British Isles, British Entomological & Natural History Society and Royal Society for the Protection of Birds.

The vast majority of our periodicals are from the 20th century, but we do have some series dating back to the Victorian era.  Our Illustrated London News series dates back to 1843.  The Haslemere Parish Magazines date back to 1874 and we hold an almost complete series of these up to the present day.  We also hold some rare copies of ‘Home Words for Heart and Hearth,’ the Shottermill Parish Magazine, dating from 1893 to 1902.

We hold a complete run of the Museums Association journal dating from 1890 to the present day.  These provide an invaluable record of the changing philosophies and practices of museums over the years.

Our archaeological journals are also a substantial resource outlining local activities and discoveries.  Surrey and Sussex Archaeological publications date back to the mid 19th century up to the present day, whilst Hampshire Archaeological publications run from early 20th century up to the present day.

This fascinating local publication tells us much about the Peasant Arts and Crafts movement at the start of the 20th century. It includes an article about the famous Haslemere Museum of Peasant Handicraft. When this museum was disbanded, its collections moved to their current location at Haslemere Educational Museum. We hold copies of this journal from 1910-1920.

This page depicts the 19th century preoccupations of death (the late Earl of Leven and Melville) social reform, war and weaponry.

The museum has a complete run of these from 1843 to 1900 and more up to 1993. They provide an excellent record of events and artistry over the years.
