These are brick red knitted fingerless mittens. They are thought to have once belonged to Hannah More (1745-1833) who was a religious writer and philanthropist. She was acquainted with Joshua Reynolds, David Garrick, Samuel Johnson, William Wilberforce and John Newton. Several local schools and the Hannah More Academy at Reisterstown, Maryland are named in her honour and her image was used in 2012 on the Bristol Pound local currency.
