    HEM Collections

    The Museum's Human History Collection features objects from around the world. The collection encompasses a wide range of different types of objects from archaeology to fine arts and textiles to European arts and crafts artefacts.

    Archaeology

    This large collection of over 23,000 items contains many Mesolithic/Neolithic flints from the nearby hill of Black Down in West Sussex, Early Romano-British/Late Celtic cremation urns from the Haslemere grave site in Beach Road, Wealden industries glass covering many glass making sites in Surrey and West Sussex. Linchmere Hoard of coins from the 3rd century AD.

    Textiles

    This mixed collection of about 2,500 pieces is mainly European in origin. It encompasses a variety of items such as samplers, whitework, lace, clothing, household materials and accessories. In particular, it includes about 1,000 items of European embroidery.

    Fine Art

    This collection of over 11,000 works comprises watercolours, oils, prints and drawings, many by local artists and of local scenes. It also includes a named collection of English church brass rubbings.

    Photographic Archive

    The photographic media collection of approximately 35,000 items consists of photographic prints, postcards, negatives, transparencies, lantern slides, cine and videotapes of a wide variety of subjects. It contains a significant number of local images including an important named collection of Haslemere buildings, events and people. It also includes an important visual record of the history of the Museum.
